The Gillingham Wheelers road racing contingent have been getting the miles and solid results in ahead of the early season trophy races, despite poor weather and early season cancellations at Upavon.
Mike Smith put in a stunning performance at the 1st Chard Wheelers’ opening spring Criterium at Ilton, devastating the field for a clear win in the 4th cat bunch sprint. This weekend he took a decisive 3rd in the 4th cats at Thruxton. This sees him move up to 3rd Cat.

Thruxton sprint finishCharles Rees has been keeping busy while at university where he put in a strong performance at Llandow Airfield to secure 5th, narrowly missing out on both the primes in a hotly contested regional A event that finished with 3 groups on the road. However, luck was with him at the Maindy Stadium Criterium the following Friday where he finally secured the prime prize and 9th overall, despite missing slipping the race breakaway.
Next Sunday is the Betty Pharoah trophy race which sees Charles Rees and a number of Somer Valley riders make the trip to Bridgend for South Wales’ equivalent of the Pittards Trophy race.
