The first of this winter’s GDW mountain bike races took place on Sunday.  Disappointingly, only eight riders took part in the hour long race but there was some tight racing amongst them and all enjoyed themselves.

Overnight rain turned the course from bone dry when Vince and his helpers were setting out the course on Saturday to being surprisingly muddy in some sections.  Paul Hopkins made light work of this and soon left the field behind and set a typically fast pace to win by a large margin.

Nigel Brown, Charles Rees, Scawen Roberts and James Chant were close together early on until Nigel zoomed up the steep climbs on his cyclocross bike and got clear of the others.  Charles and James battled for third with a small gap back to Scawen for 45 minutes or so until James faded fast near the end leaving Charles to finish third ahead of Scawen in fourth and James fifth.

James Howell was going well in his first ever off-road race and finished sixth ahead of Martin Bastable.  Sadly, after a fast start, Liam Teesdale was a non-finisher.  See the MTB page for the results and details of future events.
