A bumper field of 40 riders took to the roads around Todber and Stour Row last night for the latest GDW time trial. Paul Hopkins has been concentrating on mountain biking lately and returned to tt-ing in top form, knocking five seconds from his course record to win in 22.24. Kim Little just beat Julian Chown by one second to take the runner up spot with Vince Hounsome fourth.
The top three women riders were even closer, one second covering all three with Emma Bradley fastest (27.40) while Jane Pritchard and Liz Hutson tied on 27.41. Carole Millar was a minute faster than last time on this course with 29.42 to finish fourth.
Of the seven junior riders, Ashley Martin (Chippenham Wheelers) was again the quickest, ahead of Josh Day and Tom Brown, both of whom seemed to be getting faster by the week. Barney Cox nearly got under half an hour on 30.02 and Maria Phillips managed a 10 mile pb of 32.20.

In other recent time trials, Simon Rouse headed to Slimbridge on Saturday for Bristol South CC’s Open 10. Conditions were far from perfect and fopr the first time this year Simon was slower at an event than he had been in 2009, finishing 23rd with 24.23. Don Tanner and James Chant found things similarily difficult at the Sotonia CC Middlemarkers 10 on the A303 near Andover, an event that attracted a full filed of 120 starters. Don finished 26th on 24.02 and James was 37th (24.11).
Pontypool RC held their Open 25 on the course from Usk to Raglan and back in South Wales. Thankfully, Sunday was not as windy as Saturday had been and many riders set fast times. Steve Way (Ratae RC) recorded a time of 1.02.32 on his fixed wheel bike, Alan Smith finished in 1.03.46 and Sarah Roberts in 1.19.50. Wednesday night regular Rob Martin (Chippenham Wheelers) finished in 1.02.28 while ex-Wheeler Stuart Kerton (Chippenham) came home with a very good time of 55.46.
Wessex RC held their 50 mile tt on Sunday, run on a difficult rolling course around Bere Regis and Lytchett Minster. Vince Hounsome set a good time of 2.05.42 fo r19th position.
The second round of the Southern Mountain Bike Championship took place at Pippingford in East Sussex last weekend. Paul Hopkins (riding for Merida) maintained his good run of results with second place in the vets race with Andy Parsons doing well for 9th and Nigel Brown in 13th from the 41 starters. Nigel’s son Tom had a good run in the Youth race, finishing 12th out of the 23 starters while Emma Bradley’ string of successful rides came to an end when she failed to finish after her rear tyre came off the wheel rim.
