The first round of the GDW Henstridge race series took place last night, and although there was the odd rain shower it didn’t dampen the spirits of those competitors and supporters who attended the event. Many thanks go to Mark Geddes and his team of helpers for arranging everything.
The night started with the Youth races and there was fierce competition in the U10’s as the 3 starters battled with each other on the 10 min circuit, eventually Finn Little pulled away from Ross Hopkins to take his maiden win. In the U12’s it was a much closer affair as Toby Easby and Nathanial Brookes battled hard against each other, Toby winning the sprint in last few metres. In the U14s race there were 3 riders who established a good lead over the rest of the field, but it eventually came down to a sprint for the finish between brothers James and Connor with James taking the win. In the prestige event of the night there was a fabulous field of 24 starters who tackled the 1 mile loop of Henstridge and raced for 35 mins and 3 laps. A large group of approx 15 riders formed with current club TT champion Paul Hopkins doing the majority of the work on the front, Geordie Watson suffered a puncture about half distance but after a quick wheel change (with Marks’s wheel) and a lap out was able to rejoin the race. Paul eventually put a spurt with several laps to go and soloed away for the victory, the chasing group bunch sprint was won by Ali Bunting followed by George Smith.
